What is the difference between trifecta and boxed trifecta?

Trifecta is when you are able to pick 3 horses to finish in the exact order ie first, second and third – yes it’s very hard.

A boxed trifecta, however, is a little more fun allowing you to choose multiple horses in which any of them can finish first, second or third – allowing you a greater chance to win – however, this generally means you will win less, and have to bet a higher amount to claim a decent amount of the trifecta payout percentage.

Vauban’s back and ready to prove he’s a top contender after last year’s 14th-place finish. Under the savvy eye of Irish trainer Willie Mullins, and now with William Buick in the saddle, this horse has been honed for the Melbourne Cup 2024. Vauban’s been hitting strong form overseas, coming in second to the legendary Kyprios in the Irish St Leger. With the right prep and a relatively softer field, Vauban’s set to be the crowd favourite, and for good reason.

Buckaroo – Odds: $7.50 | Barrier: 21

Buckaroo’s been a standout in recent races, finishing first or second in his last four starts, including a powerful second in the Caulfield Cup. He’s got the energy, he’s got the drive – but with a tough Barrier 21 draw, jockey Joao Moreira will need to work some magic. If Buckaroo can navigate through the pack, he’s got every chance of finishing strong.

Absurde – Odds: $9 | Barrier: 7

Willie Mullins’ second entry, Absurde, has everything you’d want in a Melbourne Cup trifecta pick. With a solid record over 3000m and last year’s experience in the Melbourne Cup, he’s poised to improve his previous finish of 7th. Add in jockey Kerrin McEvoy’s finesse (he’s a three-time Cup winner), and Absurde is a bet we wouldn’t leave off our list.

Sea King – Odds: $13 | Barrier: 1

After taking out the Bendigo Cup last week, Sea King is coming in strong for the Melbourne Cup. The inside barrier draw gives him the edge to stay ahead, and British jockey Hollie Doyle is well up for the task. With four wins out of his last seven starts, Sea King has proven form, and at these odds, he’s a steal for your trifecta.

Okita Soushi – Odds: $12 | Barrier: 10

Okita Soushi is set to turn heads this year after a strong showing in the Moonee Valley Cup, where he edged out Sharp N Smart over 2500m. Although he finished 11th last year, his impressive run this season suggests he’s in top form. Starting from a mid-field barrier, Okita Soushi has a solid shot at improvement, especially if he replicates last year’s powerful closing speed, where he surged from 21st at the final turn. He’s definitely one to watch.

Warp Speed – Odds: $26 | Barrier: 3

Japanese runner Warp Speed might not have the same sparkling form as our other picks, but don’t underestimate him. A firmer track and favourable barrier could help him surprise the field, especially with his known affinity for longer distances. The odds may be longer, but that’s what makes him a great outside chance.
