The Denmark Hotel has thrown open its doors following extensive renovations that have transformed the iconic venue into a celebration of its Western Australian heritage, seasonal produce, and warm community spirit.

Sitting right in the heart of Denmark, the coastal pub has been a main character of the town’s story since 1926. Now, a bold new creative team is leading The Denmark Hotel into its next 100 years.

All under one roof, The Denmark Hotel will continue serving as one of the town’s favourite bar and bistros while becoming home to The Lodge and Denmark Drops. They will operate as one harmonious experience, thanks to a collaborative design process between Benson Studio and See Design Studio. The Lodge offers destination accommodation for quick weekenders or longer stays filled with winery tours, stunning hikes, and swims while Denmark Drops is the community’s newest cellar-slash-bottle-o, curating a thoughtful selection of local wines, artisanal beer, and spirits.

The Bar & Bistro: Championing the Great Southern

The Denmark Hotel is a gathering place that champions the best of the Great Southern region and Western Australia. Its ever-evolving menu highlights seasonal produce and, in turn, supports local farmers and growers. Whether it’s locals catching up with loved ones or sun-kissed travellers relaxing after a day of adventure, the Bar & Bistro is where Denmark comes to unwind, reconnect, and indulge.

Co-General Managers Ryan O’Meara and Andries Mostert are both keen for the Denmark community to see how the renovations came together.

“We know locals won’t be disappointed by this upgrade to the Denmark Hotel. The authenticity of the town’s pub has been retained, but we’ve taken the food offering to the next level and created this modern, relaxed setting for it,” O’Meara said.

“The Denmark community deserves somewhere like this. It’s the kind of place that acts as a meeting place, where everyone is welcome, as well as providing a focal point for guests visiting the region. That’s something the whole town can benefit from,” Mostert added.

Both know that wine and viticulture are the lifeblood of the region. And as winemakers themselves, they’ve got skin in the game. O’Meara is behind Express while Mostert runs Brave New Wine. The pair have guided the curation of the Bar & Bistro wine list. It will evolve over time and from season to season, but will consistently bring together local varietals with rarities from around the world.

This collective knowledge of the Great Southern terroir has also been a boon to Executive Chef Ali Osborne, who’s already well known for having slung breakfasts aplenty from the kitchen of nearby café, Mrs Jones.

“At the Denmark Hotel, making food is a labour of love,” Osborne said.

“We’re surrounded by pristine land and sea that inspire us daily. Our local growers provide us with the finest produce, including prime meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, grains, and nuts — all sourced from our own backyard. I feel fortunate to be able to craft fresh, vibrant dishes alongside comforting pub classics, showcasing the best our region has to offer.”

The Lodge: Casual comfort inspired by the region’s beauty

Credit: Nic Duncan

While the Denmark Hotel has always offered cosy lodgings, these 24 meticulously renovated spaces — with three different types of rooms available — are a new kind of casual comfort.

“Our vision was to reveal the essence of the original hotel,” Director of Fremantle-based Benson Studio, Michael Benson said.

“Each guest room has been inspired by the natural beauty of the region: the colour palette draws from the land and sea, where sandy shores meet the bush. We wanted to create relaxed, inviting spaces designed for comfort and adventure, places where guests can truly unwind without feeling constrained by formality.”

“One of our first steps was removing ceilings, cladding, and floors that had concealed any historic character. This revealed The Lodge’s heritage features like the original balconies, now proudly showcased in the Bar & Bistro, old lighting fixtures, and timber floors. This process, combined with our contemporary application of traditional materials, and the restoration of fireplaces throughout the venue, has resulted in a warm and inviting space for all.”

Denmark Drops: A viticultural reset

Credit: Nic Duncan

This new boutique feels like the kind of cellar you might find in Northbridge or Fitzroy, but sitting alongside the cloudy bottles of orange wine — de rigueur for any picnic in 2024 — are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the other varietals for which the Great Southern is internationally renowned.

Denmark Drops also contains a bookable tasting room that’s geared to function as a centralised cellar door for smaller, local operators and artisanal producers, or even as a small function space for events.

“As local winemakers ourselves, we could not be more excited about championing the Great Southern’s producers of wines, but also local beers, spirits, and cider,” O’Meara said.

“In addition to all the regional representation on the wine list and the taps at our Bar & Bistro, Denmark Drops brings this super eclectic range of drinks from around Australia and the world — the kinds of rarities you really can’t find anywhere else in the region. You’ll also be able to grab some locally produced cheeses, small goods, and other delicious snacks from the Drops’ own pantry.”

“Whether you need a longneck of Swan Draught to quench a thirst after a hard day, or maybe an interesting artisan bottle of wine to impress dinner guests, we’re going to have something for you. And for any budget,” Mostert added.

“Plus, with Denmark Drops we can offer a really in-depth level of local wine knowledge, and trustworthy advice on pairings, that feels accessible for everyone.”

The post Taste Great Southern Festival Set For New Look And Extended For Three More Years appeared first on So Perth

]]>
Taste Great Southern is a premier culinary festival in Western Australia’s events calendar, centred around celebrating the region’s local talent, venues, produce, cultural heritage, and rugged natural beauty.

It’s expected to attract thousands of visitors from outside the Great Southern region over the next three years, generating millions of dollars for the local economy.

New four-day format with interactive town takeovers

Based primarily in Albany and Denmark, the festival will run in a new four-day format from Thursday, May 1st to Sunday, May 4th. The 2025 iteration will also include interactive town takeovers in Mount Barker, Porongurup, Frankland River, and Katanning, to encourage visitors to explore undiscovered locations.

The festival will feature a line-up of world-class chefs and a packed schedule of events including a journey through the vines in Denmark, chef collaborations, wine masterclasses, and premium produce pop-ups, all aimed at showcasing local businesses and the region.

Taste Great Southern 2025 will be delivered by new owner, Australia’s South West, with destination event specialists AHOY Management, known for their work on Cabin Fever Festival and Pair’d Margaret River Region, to lead the event management.

“As a long-time supporter of Taste Great Southern, I am excited to experience the new format and approach to the festival that shows off the best our region has to offer — exquisite local food and drinks, a stunning natural environment and incredible cultural heritage,” Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens said.

“This three-year extension further adds to Albany’s reputation as a must-visit tourism destination, and provides visitors with a reason to visit as the weather starts to cool down,” Stephens said.

“Taste Great Southern has been an important festival on our State’s culinary events calendar for over 20 years and has given local hospitality businesses and tourism operators an economic boost and unique platform to showcase the world-class food and wine coming from their region,” Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said.

“Taste Great Southern is the perfect event to centre a self-drive holiday around, and I encourage travellers to hit the road next May to explore the wider region, before heading along to this great event.”

Bustling with world-class restaurants, vibrant history, and stunning architecture from years gone by is how the port city of Fremantle is best described. It’s one of Australia’s largest heritage-listed precincts, perched where the Swan River and Indian Ocean collide, a convenient 22 kilometres from the CBD. It’s a destination where award-winning eats and drinks are the norm, served with a side of old-world charm and soul. So with all of that in mind, a visit to Fremantle is a must before the end of 2024.

With 22 kilometres of pristine white sand and turquoise waters, it’s no wonder this iconic spot is a bucket list destination for travellers from around the world. The stunning blend of auburn and pastel pink skies, combined with the reflection of camels on the shoreline, makes it a photographer’s dream.

Yes, we know it’s been done to death. But, there’s a reason why Kings Park and Botanic Garden is recommended time after time as one of Perth’s top picnic destinations. If it’s not on your bucket list, it deserves to be. Vast green spaces, pops of botanical colour, awesome playgrounds, pristine bushland trails, and city skyline views. What’s not to love? Pack the basket and picnic blanket and get out and appreciate Perth’s glorious scenery before 2024 is over.

Watching the sunset at Denmark’s most popular beach is always a good idea. Greens Pool, located about 440 kilometres from Perth in William Bay National Park, is a turquoise bay framed by massive granite boulders and stretches of pristine white sand. A favourite among locals and travellers alike, it’s perfect for snorkelling, paddle boarding, and picnicking. Just a five-minute stroll east of Greens Pool lies another beloved spot, Elephant Rocks — a sheltered cove where towering granite formations resemble a herd of elephants wading in the shallow waters.

Visit the kangaroos at Lucky Bay

The story goes that while exploring the south coast of Australia in 1802, Matthew Flinders sailed a dangerous route through the Recherche Archipelago. He named it Lucky Bay when his vessel, HMS Investigator, took shelter from a summer storm. The botanist, Robert Brown, then went ashore and explored diverse and largely unknown flora, discovering and naming many new species.

Since then, the magnificent stretch of coastline has become one of Australia’s most celebrated beaches, home to the Lucky Bay kangaroos, and what is arguably considered the country’s whitest sand. When it comes to unique Australian experiences, seeing kangaroos on the beach would have to be up there! Plus, the sheltered bay is also ideal for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and surfing. Take it from us, you’ll want to tick this one off the bucket list!

Discover famed pink lake, Hutt Lagoon

Western Australia’s spectacular landscapes are known to draw international tourists from far and wide — and for good reason. But none are as bright and unique as the pink lakes scattered throughout our state — they’re weird, wonderful, and naturally make for incredible photo opportunities. One of the most famous is Hutt Lagoon, nestled just over five hours north of Perth, between Geraldton and Kalbarri. Sometimes bright bubblegum pink, sometimes lilac, and occasionally even red, head out before sunset and watch the colours transform.

Dinner at Gibney — or another of Perth’s top restaurants

Gibney in Cottesloe
Credit: @gibneycottesloe

Very few restaurants have harnessed the buzz that brand-new beachside brasserie Gibney has amassed since its announcement in 2023. And for good reason. For starters, it’s all about the location — blissfully overlooking the pristine beaches of Cottesloe, on the corner of Marine Parade and Gibney Street. The fine dining establishment has cemented itself on the foodie bucket lists of many, so if you consider yourself somewhat of a connoisseur, why not give it a shot?

With enough room for 160 diners, almost 600 square metres of oceanfront hospitality, and unmatched views, Gibney is easily the fanciest of all the venues under the George Kailis name. Since opening in May, the oceanside eatery has risen to the top of the food chain and might just be the most opulent dining destination in Perth.

Discover dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point

Just ten minutes from Broome’s town centre, Gantheaume Point features a stunning stretch of white sandy beach and striking red cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Follow the well-trodden path past the interpretive signs at the cliffs and lighthouse to discover the cast of real dinosaur footprints. Over 130 million years old, these ancient footprints can be seen at the base of the cliffs during very low tide.

Cooking class

Perth bucket list item: go to a cooking class
Credit: @saltandcompany

If food is your thing, end 2024 by checking a cooking class off your bucket list. Perth has plenty of fantastic options to sharpen your culinary skills, but our top pick is Salt and Company in West Perth. They see cooking as an art — one you can eat! The classes are hands-on, interactive, and fun, with experienced instructors guiding you through a variety of cuisines, from Greek and Italian to Sri Lankan and French. We simply can’t get enough.

Western Australia’s South West region is synonymous with stunning landscapes, and waterfalls are without a doubt among the highlights. These magnificent natural spectacles are well and truly flowing, creating the perfect backdrop for an Insta-worthy snap or serene spot to sit while lapping up the sights and sounds of nature.

These waterfalls are best visited during the wetter months — from late autumn to early spring — when they’re at their fullest. Each offers a unique experience, from easy-access viewing platforms to more challenging hikes through magnificent natural landscapes. So, dust off those boots and pack your backpacks, because here are the waterfalls well worth adding to your hit list.

Quinninup Falls, Margaret River

In the language of the Wadandi (Saltwater) people, the land’s traditional owners, Quinninup means place of the Zamia Palm. The falls and the surrounding area are also of immense importance to Wadandi culture. Located not far from the coast near Moses Rock, Quinninup Falls is a beautiful waterfall best enjoyed in winter or early spring when it’s flowing. The hike to the falls offers picturesque coastal vistas, and while rewarding, can be quite physically challenging. Depending on your level of fitness, it takes around 45 minutes to walk to the falls and almost an hour to walk back.

Beedelup Falls, Pemberton

If you have a penchant for waterfalls, add Beedelup Falls to the top of your list. Nestled within Beedelup National Park, half an hour by car from the Pemberton town centre, the falls are present year-round. But if you want our two cents, the winter or early spring months are the best time to see them in full flow. Enveloped by karri forest, there’s also a suspension bridge that crosses over Beedelup Brook and provides excellent views of the enchanting falls and surrounding greenery. Word to the wise: if you visit during the springtime, you’ll also witness some of the region’s most spectacular wildflowers.

Fernhook Falls, Walpole

Fernhook Falls, Walpole

Tucked away in the forest near Deep River, the quaint Fernhook Falls Campsite is home to eight tent sites and a couple of camp huts. It’s the perfect base for exploring the falls which are known to gush furiously over the granite boulders creating a whitewash of froth during winter. Conversely, in summer, the flow is reduced to a trickle and Rowell’s Pool is a much calmer and peaceful place. The walk trails and boardwalks have been designed to give you a fabulous view of the cascading falls and the pristine forest surrounding them while allowing wheelchair access to parts of the site.

Ironstone Gully Falls, Bunbury

Set southeast of Capel, towards Donnybrook along Goodwood Road, Ironstone Gully Falls is the ultimate place to pull in for a picnic. In winter, the stream — having followed a course through one of the region’s many jarrah forests — crosses under the road, and gently rambles over a series of rapids, dropping over a nine-metre ledge. From August to October, the surrounding countryside abounds with a technicolour display of wildflowers.

Waterfall Beach, Denmark

Waterfall Beach, Denmark

If you’re travelling even further south, head to Waterfall Beach in Denmark. Perched just a few kilometres east of tourism hotspot Greens Pool, the small waterfall tumbles down the weathered rocks onto the beach below. When it’s in full flow, it creeps along the white sand toward the crystal blue water of William Bay National Park. While you don’t get quite the same effect during the summer months, the beach itself and the turquoise waters are more than worth the trek, if we do say so ourselves.

Yalgardup Falls, Margaret River

Yalgardup Falls, Margaret River

Yalgardup Falls, also known as Kevill Road Waterfall, is a convenient five-minute drive west of Margaret River. While the waterfall isn’t tall, it’s wide, and the thundering flow of water over the rocks makes it a dreamy place to visit after the winter rains. For those who are a little more daring to embrace the chill, you’ll find a couple of hidden spots along the falls to swim. At other times of the year, when the flow reduces to a gentle stream, you can rock-hop or walk right across the river. You can find Yalgardup Falls along Kevill Road. As it’s not a well-known tourist spot, there’s no signpost, but the waterfall is visible from the road near the parking area.

Marrinup Falls, Dwellingup

Marrinup Falls, Dwellingup
Credit: Tourism Western Australia

Surrounded by native bushland and on the way into Dwellingup, Marrinup Falls is a seasonal set of rapids that are a delight to visit during spring. Here, you’ll explore the forest lining Marrinup Brook as you make your way past several small rapids and down to the main section of the falls. Keep your eyes peeled for vibrant wildflowers and orchids along the edge of the trail, and if you get the timing right, the Hotham Valley tourist train. The falls are a must-visit for any trip to the Dwellingup region, and particularly during the spring.

Nestled in the historic Manning Buildings in the High Street Mall is Fremantle’s new Scandinavian-inspired brunch destination. Elske — which translates to “with love” in Danish — is the brainchild of esteemed culinary duo Sean Marshall and Kristina Jensen, who most recently transformed Wembley institution, Cambridge Corner Store.

Fremantle’s newest brunch spot

Elske in Fremantle
Credit: Danica Zuks

Elske is a love letter to Jensen’s Danish heritage, with smørrebrød — open-faced sandwiches on dark rye bread — forming the heart of the menu, alongside moreish brunch favourites, and creative additions.

The chefs have designed their own modern spin on the traditional Scandi classic, heaping their smørrebrød with fresh toppings such as house gravad lax (cured salmon), roasted beets, slow-cooked pork belly, rare roast beef fillet, potato salad, remoulade, and more.

You’ll also find smoothies, shakes, and juices paired with coffee from fellow Fremantle locals Grand Central. There’s also potential for the overall menu to expand into dinner and drinks down the track.

“Offering menu items that draw from the flavours of Denmark and Northern Europe feels like home for me; it is a returning to the type of cuisine I grew up with,” Jensen said.

“Elske is us in our happy place, cooking the dishes we love and sharing with the community. Our dishes are wholesome, fresh, and satisfying — the perfect kind of food to fill up on for a day of exploring in Fremantle.”

Scandi minimalism, cosy décor, and plenty of green

Elske

Elske’s fit-out nods to Scandi minimalism, complementing the original wooden floors of the Manning Buildings with neutral, pared-back, cosy décor, and plenty of green plants.

“For us, Fremantle combines the very best parts of our favourite cities from around the world,” Marshall said.

“There is the sense of history, community, culture, and of course a commitment to excellent dining and coffee. We are very excited to be bringing our passion for food to the area and look forward to introducing new flavours to the brunch set,” he said.

Since meeting in the kitchen of Sydney’s three-hatted Quay restaurant in 2000, Marshall and Jensen’s resumes have featured stints in award-winning restaurants, five-star hotels, and acclaimed eateries in Melbourne, England, Dublin, and New Zealand. So it’s safe to say, you’re in good hands.

Elske is now open, and is located at Shop 28, 135 High Street, Fremantle.

Top Ten Guide: Best Wineries In The South West https://soperth.com.au/eats-drinks/top-ten-guide-best-wineries-in-the-south-west-116047 Mon, 29 Jul 2024 04:06:56 +0000 https://soperth.com.au/?p=116047 Australia’s South West is home to some of the world’s most renowned wineries. Here’s our Top Ten Guide of where to find the finest glasses.

The post Top Ten Guide: Best Wineries In The South West appeared first on So Perth

]]>
Brimming with extraordinary beaches, lush farmland, and magnificent forests, to say Western Australia’s South West has a lot going for it would be the understatement of the century. Located just three hours by car from Perth, the region is also home to a handful of the world’s finest wineries.

With so many magnificent vineyards and estates worthy of exploration, the hardest part is deciding where to go. That’s why we’ve done the hard yards and rounded up what we consider to be the best wineries in the South West — the crème de la crème, if you will. All you need to do is add them to your must-visit list!

Cherubino

Cherubino
Credit: @cherubinowines

Not even the snobbiest of wine snobs can turn their nose up at Cherubino’s bottles, or their impeccably classy cellar door for that matter. Framed by the poetic surroundings of the Cherubino vineyard and rose garden, the building’s charm nods to Tuscany and features an alfresco verandah and dining room, gorgeously enveloped with stone and wood. Often hailed as the best of the best in the South West, a wine tour through the region is not complete without a stop here. Just make sure you book in for a tasting so you don’t miss out.

Our pick of wines that must be tasted while there? The UOVO Cabernet Touriga. In the meantime, you can enjoy a taste at the stunning Cherubino City Cellar in Subiaco.

Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix
Credit: @vassefelixwines

When it comes to the best wineries in the South West, you simply can’t look past Margaret River’s founding wine estate, Vasse Felix. The stunning cellar door, restaurant, and gallery fuses rustic charm with a dimly lit, modern edge — best enjoyed with one of the delightful vintage wines. Alternatively, curate your visit with a seated tasting at the cellar door, relax with wine and charcuterie in the Wine Lounge, or explore behind the scenes with one of the specialised tour experiences.

Singlefile Wines

Singlefile Wines
Credit: @singlefilewine

Singlefile is a must-visit winery in the Great Southern wine region — the locals will tell you that much.

But since winning James Halliday’s Dark Horse Winery of the Year, the Denmark winery has garnered a loyal following all over the world. The cellar door offers seated tastings, so we recommend doing just that. Find a romantic table for two or plonk down at one of the outdoor benches and the crew will swing by to give you the rundown.

Singlefile is renowned for its chardonnay, but it would be rude not to try the entire range. If there’s something that tickles your fancy, order it by the glass and enjoy the complimentary cheese platter that accompanies it.

Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate

Born from a vision of producing wines that rank among the best of the world, Leeuwin Estate is renowned as one of the founding wineries of the world-class Margaret River region. The name is one of the most well-known with everyone from amateur wine enthusiasts to more seasoned oenophiles recognising the quality drops the winery produces — and yes, we can confirm, it lives up to the hype.

The estate celebrates all things food, wine, art, and music, featuring an award-winning restaurant, art gallery, and stunning cellar door. Our pick? The iconic Art Series Chardonnay which has earned its place as exceptional in the eyes of the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian wine.

Wills Domain

Wills Domain

Perched atop 20 hectares of vine-lined rolling hills in Yallingup’s Gunyulgup Valley, Wills Domain is an impressive and refined vineyard, cellar door, and restaurant known for its extremely drinkable signature Cabernet Sauvignon.

The beloved South West establishment plates up sustainably sourced, wild-harvested produce, and is, without a doubt, one of the region’s best restaurants. Choose between a two, four, or seven-course degustation experience, with wines to match. There’s also a vegetarian option which tastes as good as it looks. To set the scene, we’re talking Geraldton crayfish, heirloom tomatoes and stracciatella, dry-aged Arkady lamb, and Wagin duck with beetroot and rhubarb.

Cullen Wines

Cullen Wines

Born from the ancient soils of Wilyabrup, Cullen Wines is another pioneer of the Margaret River wine region. The respected establishment does things differently as a fully biodynamic, carbon-neutral, and naturally powered estate. Not to mention the oh, so, beautiful granite and timber cellar door and restaurant that will have you mesmerised the moment you step inside. Go for a tasting and stay for lunch under the peppermint trees and overlooking the vineyards.

Glenarty Road

Glenarty Road

This regenerative farm, vineyard, and restaurant is well-known as being among the crème de la crème of the South West food and wine scene. Nestled on the working farm of owners Ben and Sasha McDonald, the Karridale winery-restaurant treads a line of contemporary class and rustic charm.

For a taste of the Glenarty goodness, book a Wild Wine and Farm Food experience. You’ll experience the Wildlings and Kinfolk collections through an in-depth comparative style tasting with a spread of freshly baked bread, housemade cheese, farm snacks, and charcuterie. Or for a truly indulgent experience, choose from a three or five-course sustainable farm-to-table feast with paired wines.

Juniper Estate

Sitting pretty among rolling hills and sweeping vineyards, Juniper Estate is one of the most picturesque spots in Wilyabrup.

First planted in 1973, it sits in the history books alongside Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood, and Woodlands as one of the founding vineyards of the region. The range reflects an emphasis on the region’s most enduring varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay — while promoting originality and innovation through work with alternative varieties like Tempranillo and Fiano. Juniper was also one of ten Margaret River wineries to be placed in Halliday’s Wine Companion Top 100 Wineries 2023.

Woodlands

David and Heather Watson established Woodlands in 1973 within the Wilyabrup Valley. Since then, they’ve won a multitude of awards and now have an annual production of 12,000 cases. The winery’s premier wine — the Cabernet Sauvignon — is still made from the Watson’s original planting and continues to garner awards and critical acclaim, including its listing in the Langton’s Classification of Fine Wines. In 2016, the couple were also the joint recipients of the prestigious Jack Mann Memorial Medal which is awarded annually to those who’ve made a significant contribution to the WA wine industry.

Frankland Estate

Frankland Estate has emerged as one of the great vineyards of Australia. The second-generation winery is run by brother and sister duo Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, with Elizabeth’s husband Brian Kent at the winemaking helm since 2010. Every bottle that bears the Frankland name is organically grown on the aptly named Isolation Ridge vineyard in a process best described as light-touch. The winery hangs its hat on the limited-production Riesling and Syrah bottles, which are the result of the finest parcels of the oldest vines.

The post Top Ten Guide: Best Beaches In The South West appeared first on So Perth

]]>
Australia’s South West is renowned worldwide for its star-studded line-up of magnificent beaches. The best part is — that it’s not uncommon to have the whole coastline to yourself. From isolated bays brimming with marine life to glittering turquoise lagoons, there’s so much to choose from when it comes to this heavenly slice of paradise. For natural beauty worthy of a fairy tale, here are the best beaches in WA’s South West.

The Aquarium

The Aquarium is a hidden gem in the South West crown that’s well worth getting off the beaten track for. Sandwiched between Smiths Beach and Canal Rocks, the sparkling turquoise lagoon is an idyllic place for a swim or snorkel. The beloved watering hole is protected by large granite outcrops, so the waters are almost always calm, and crystal-clear.

Injidup Natural Spa

Injidup Natural Spa, South West

Once a secret swimming spot, and now a bucket list item to be ticked off by families, photographers and Instagrammers. Just a short drive south of Yallingup, the natural rock formation is a favourite hidden rock pool for many. Located at the north end of Injidup Beach, the picturesque coastal “spa” is protected from the winds, and the perfect spot to perch with a book. If you want to dodge the crowds, it’s also best to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Yallingup Beach

Yallingup Beach, South West

From big waves to a serene and sheltered lagoon, Yallingup has it all. The beach is a popular swim, and surf spot, adored by families and wave-chasers alike. It’s also often frequented by snorkellers and stand-up paddle boarders, and for good reason. But it’s the drive down Yallingup Beach Road that’s enough to take your breath away. Fittingly, Yallingup also means “place of love” in the Wardandi Aboriginal language.

Greens Pool

Greens Pool, Denmark

Fit for a postcard, Greens Pool is easily Denmark’s most popular, bucket-list worthy beach, and for good reason. Perched about 415 kilometres from Perth, within William Bay National Park, the wonderfully aqua bay is fringed by a large granite boulder and a glorious expanse snow-white sand. It’s adored by locals and travellers alike, who visit to swim, snorkel, rock jump, paddle board and picnic. Elephant Rocks is another equally-treasured sheltered cove, only five-minutes by foot from Greens Pool. The name comes from the resident soaring granite boulders that resemble a herd of elephants bathing in the shallow waters.

Eagle Bay

Eagle Bay, Dunsborough

Characterised by sparkling azure water and dazzling white sand, Eagle Bay is another hard hitter when it comes to the South West beach scene. Just below the eastern tip of Cape Naturaliste, its calm coastline makes it a favourite for sun soakers, ocean lovers and families. The small beachside suburb also boasts an impressive collection of things to do, from wine tasting to whale watching, so you’ll never be short of ways to while away the hours.

Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve and Little Beach

Credit: Tourism Western Australia

After making a name for itself on social media, Two Peoples Bay is now recognised far and wide as one of Western Australia’s most spectacular nature reserves. Synonymous with sweeping curves, crisp white sand, azure waters and granite boulders, the picture-perfect swim, dive, canoe and fishing spot is the feature of countless award-winning photographs. Located only 35 kilometres east of Albany, be sure to check out the scenic heritage trail and loads of gorgeous lookout spots along the way — approximately a two-hour round trip.

Boranup Beach

Boranup Beach
Credit: Alexandra Casey

Stretching 7.8 kilometres north from Hamelin Bay, Boranup Beach is one of the longest beaches in the Margaret River Region. The bumpy four-wheel-drive access track leading to the dream-like coastline is as challenging as the destination is spectacular. Think white sand framed by the forest on one side and pristine blue ocean on the other. Not to mention, no crowds. Heaven.

Meelup Beach

Credit: Frances Andrijich

You won’t ever go wrong with a visit to one of Dunsborough’s most popular, family-friendly beaches. Known for its glistening turquoise water and native flora and fauna, the generally subdued shore of Meelup is a great place to park up for the day with an umbrella. Its name is an Aboriginal word meaning “place of the moon rising” because at certain times of the year, the moon appears to rise from the sea. If you’re keen on a little exercise, try the “Meelup Foreshore Walk Trail” which takes you along the coast for four kilometres from Meelup to Dunsborough. Don’t forget to check out other Castle Rock — another South West icon — and Curtis Bay along the way.

Contos Beach

Framed by steep hills and limestone cliffs, Contos well and truly nails the brief when it comes to natural beauty. The beach is best for swimming and fishing on calm days, and suitable for surfing when mid-sized swells roll in. Contos is also a fabulous place to hike, as the famous Cape to Cape Track follows the cliffs above the beach. It’s quite possibly the prettiest section of the track, well worth a half day hike to Bob’s Hollow and back. You might even be lucky enough to spot an emu, goanna, or kangaroo while you’re at it.

Lights Beach

Perched south-west of Denmark, Lights Beach is an incredibly beautiful, rocky stretch of coastline, lined by large, powerful waves. In winter, you’ll spot hordes of surfers tackling the tides, while summer sports dogs aplenty as others float in the rock pools. It’s also one end of the Wilderness Ocean Walk (WOW) Trail, a 6.2 kilometre (one-way) bitumen trail between Ocean Beach and Lights Beach.

Brimming with extraordinary beaches, lush farmland, and magnificent forests, to say Western Australia’s South West has a lot going for it would be the understatement of the century. The region is also home to a handful of the world’s finest wineries and dining establishments.

With so many amazing places to choose from, the hardest part is deciding where to go. That’s why we’ve done the hard yards and rounded up what we consider to be the best restaurants in the South West — the crème de la crème, if you will. All you need to do is add them to your must-visit list!

Glenarty Road — Karridale

Best Restaurants In The South West: Glenarty Road — Karridale

This regenerative farm, vineyard, and restaurant is well-known as being among the crème de la crème of the South West foodie scene. Nestled on the working farm of owners Ben and Sasha McDonald, the Karridale winery-restaurant treads a line of contemporary class and rustic charm.

Choose from a three or five-course sustainable farm-to-table feast with paired wines and you can expect a selection of grass-fed meats cooked over coals, house-made charcuterie, sides of freshly harvested seasonal produce, and desserts celebrating the orchard and flower garden. If you want the complete experience, opt for one of the farm and garden tours, many of which include the tasting of wine, freshly baked bread, and charcuterie.

Leeuwin Estate — Witchcliffe

Best Restaurants In The South West: Leeuwin Estate — Witchcliffe

Born from a vision of producing wines that rank among the best of the world, Leeuwin Estate is renowned as one of the founding wineries of the world-class Margaret River region.

Headed by chef Dan Gedge, the Leeuwin Restaurant focuses on flavour, texture, and aromas, and combines exceptional seasonal WA produce with current, and museum-release Leeuwin Estate wines. Guests have the choice of two quintessential fine dining experiences: a three-course seasonal menu, and a six-course tasting menu. Think scallop crudo paired with 2016 Art Series Riesling, line-caught fish matched with 2009 Art Series Chardonnay, and Margaret River wagyu accompanied by a glass of 2013 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

De’sendent — Margaret River

Best Restaurants In The South West: De’sendent — Margaret River

Perched at the top of Margaret River’s main street, De’sendent is a brand new, intimate, and refined restaurant which only recently opened its doors in January 2024. Owned by Ann Spencer and Executive Chef Evan Hayter, it’s the next incarnation of their previous winery venture Arimia Estate.

Evan is passionate about where his ingredients come from, and how they’re grown and reared, so guests can expect high-quality organic produce and WA ingredients like abalone, full-blooded Waygu beef, and marron, sourced from small-batch suppliers. The 35-seat restaurant also features a diverse wine list showcasing premium local, national, and international wines that complement the calibre of food.

Garrison — Albany

Best Restaurants In The South West: Garrison — Albany

With an incredibly varied menu designed to be shared, and driven by fresh, seasonal produce, Garrison is an Albany staple in the fine dining space. Expect the likes of Southern Ocean Akoya oysters, Jerusalem artichokes served with truffle oil, and almond dukkah, chilled cod in crispy cannoli, baked artichoke ravioli, locally caught market fish, and kangaroo sous vide.

Wills Domain — Yallingup

Best Restaurants In The South West: Wills Domain — Yallingup

Perched atop 20 hectares of vine-lined rolling hills in Yallingup’s Gunyulgup Valley, Wills Domain is an impressive and refined vineyard restaurant and cellar door known for its extremely drinkable signature Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vasse Felix — Cowaramup

Best Restaurants In The South West: Vasse Felix — Cowaramup

Vasse Felix was Margaret River’s first commercial vineyard, so it comes as no surprise that it’s another hard hitter when it comes to gourmet indulgence in the South West. Choose between à la carte dining or allow the chefs to take you on a Margaret River culinary journey with the tasting menu. Both options are graced by everchanging local and seasonal produce which complement their wine collection beautifully. With thoughtful combinations like the mortadella-stuffed char sui glazed quail and toothfish with pistachio, dashi, and enoki, you simply can’t go wrong.

The Dam — Denmark

Best Restaurants In The South West: The Dam — Denmark

The Dam is perched on a picturesque farming property bordering William Bay National Park, home to 450 black Angus cattle, 2,500 French black truffle-producing oak trees, two tonnes of marron, and more than eight acres of commercial Cannabis Sativa (hemp).

The seasonally inspired restaurant and distillery balance the rustic with the refined in a space that captures the essence of the Great Southern region with a farm-to-plate and paddock-to-bottle ethos. Located only ten minutes from the Denmark town centre, the restaurant overlooks a large dam and lush green hills set against towering eucalypts. The menu spotlights local Australian produce, with a slight nod to the head chef’s Mediterranean heritage. The barramundi cartoccio, grilled lamb rump, and Wagyu sirloin are all highly recommended.

Meelup Farmhouse — Meelup

If you’re searching for somewhere aesthetic for brunch or lunch, look no further than this relaxed restaurant and bar set amongst the trees on a charming hobby farm just eight minutes from the town of Dunsborough.

Encapsulating the quintessential South West lifestyle, Meelup Farmhouse oozes all things coastal luxe, with a sensational view that goes down a treat with their exquisite culinary offerings. You’ll be dining under a lantern-lined veranda enveloped by native bushland and paddocks. The menu showcases all things local, so expect baked Margaret River brie with chargrilled Yallingup Woodfired sourdough, market fish ceviche with avocado cream, ginger and garlic squid, pillowy mushroom gnocchi, and five spice tofu.

Fishbone Wines — Wilyabrup

Fishbone Wines

For a Margaret River culinary experience that’s as scenic as it is delicious, the 165 acre Fishbone estate is a picturesque expanse of gently sloping hills, falling into the Wilyabrup brook. Here, the guiding principles are all about celebrating the land, the vine, and the varieties — put simply, a purist approach to winemaking. Set against the enchanting vineyard backdrop is Fishbone Wines — an elegant and refined Japanese restaurant. We recommend taking a perch on the sun-draped terrace overlooking the vineyard with a glass of Fishbone wine, imported sake or local beer, accompanied by a delightful selection of freshly-made sushi.

Liberté — Albany

Housed inside the heritage-listed London Hotel, Liberté is a Parisian-inspired bar plating up a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisine, alongside an excellent range of wine and craft beer. The stylish downtown bar is trendy, and very city, but completely unpretentious. It fits right into the charming port city of Albany. Try the delightfully fluffy baos and crowd-pleasing crispy pork belly, and you’ll love it as much as the writers who’ve reviewed it.

Brought to you by TABtouch. Better your bet.

Over the last month, Australia has come together as a nation and shown that women’s sport is massive in Australia. Along the way, the Matildas’ have managed to re-write the history books and are now the most-watched television program — overall, not just sport — since 2001 when the current rating system was established. Don’t ask us how they measure viewership numbers as we don’t know, but Wednesday’s semi-final game against England reached 11.5 million viewers across Australia. That’s almost half of Australia’s population!

Unfortunately, the result wasn’t what we all had hoped for but the Matildas’ efforts and progress in the tournament have inspired the next generation. Regardless of the result of their upcoming third-place game on Saturday, they will have a massive and lasting impact on football in Australia.

With just two matches left to play, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is coming to an end. Who will be crowned the champion and will Australia take out the third-place spot, solidifying their spot as the most successful Australian team ever at a FIFA World Cup?

The final matches

This is what it all comes down to — the final two matches to crown the champion and decide who finishes second and third.

First up is the third-place match between Sweden and Australia. Both teams have everything to play for and this will be a thrilling match to watch — we’ll be watching from the FIFA Fan Festival at Forrest Chase amongst all the other Tillies’ fans who’ll be there. We have to be very biased on this one — our prediction is obviously for Australia to win and take out the third spot on the winners’ podium.

Then, on Sunday, is the big game — Spain versus England — to decide who gets the crown and their names in the history books. Both teams have strong case and this will be the tightest game of the tournament. Head to head, the two teams have played each other 11 times, with Spain winning twice, England winning six times, and the remaining three games resulting in a draw. Our prediction is for England to win this 2-1.

The Matildas’ road so far

How and where to watch

Unfortunately, neither of the final two matches is being played in Perth, so unless you’re flying to Brisbane or Sydney to watch the matches, you’ll want to tune in somewhere. Here are your options.

FIFA Fan Festival

The time of this game is perfect to head into the CBD and watch the game at the FIFA Fan Festival at Forrest Chase. Big screen, hundreds of other fans, the atmosphere will be electric and make the game that much more enjoyable, especially if the Matildas win. Along with the activations, there’ll be food and drinks, and of course, a lot of singing from the fans.

Sports Bars

Perth has a number of sports bars that will make for the perfect location to watch the matches. Given the popularity of the tournament so far, pretty much every bar, pub, and everything in between that has a screen will be showing the game so choose your favourite spot and settle in.

Watching at home

Optus Sport and 7plus will be televising both remaining matches.

Here’s what the next challenge looks like.

The Aussies made it through to the elimination rounds in the most emphatic way possible, beating Canada by four goals. What a result.

After Nigeria played out a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland, Australia finished Group B in the number one spot, affording them a slightly easier path to the final. So, what does their path to the Final look like and who will they face along the way?

From here onwards, the tournament works in an elimination format so there’s no margin for error.

Matildas vs Denmark — Australia’s Round of 16 Challenge

While the above table outlines all of the Round of 16 games and the time you can watch them, let’s face it, the must-watch game is — Australia vs Denmark.

Given how Australia dealt with Canada when it mattered, they will have a strong chance against Denmark. Sam Kerr will also likely play a big part in this upcoming match, something the Matildas have missed so far this tournament. Widely regarded as the best player in the world, it’s a big boost to the team to have her available and match fit.

Our prediction for the match is that Australia will be high on emotion from their massive last win. That coupled with home ground advantage and a match-fit Kerr will make the Matildas too strong for Denmark. Final score: 3 – 1 with Australia advancing to the Quarter Finals to face either France or Morocco.

Are you ready to cheer on the Matildas as they compete in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil?

Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting this year’s tournament across nine cities and ten stadiums. Yes, Perth is one of those cities with several key games being held. The tournament will run from Thursday, July 20 to Sunday, August 20 with a record 32 nations competing for the title.

The tournament has grown strongly over the years, showing both the popularity of the sport in general and the strength and competitiveness of the women’s game. In 1991, it all started as a 12-team competition, growing to 16 countries in 1999, then 24 countries in 2015. More than one million tickets have already been snapped up for this year’s tournament, which makes it likely to become the most attended women’s sporting event ever.

When and where is the Women’s World Cup?

The FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place between July 20 and August 20, 2023 in nine cities across Australia and New Zealand. Six of those cities are in Australia with five of the matches being held in Perth.

The opening match of the tournament sees New Zealand take on Norway at Eden Park in Auckland on Thursday, July 20 at 3:00 PM AWST.

The Matildas’ first match is against the Republic of Ireland later that same day at 6:00 pm at Stadium Australia in Sydney. While the Matildas won’t be playing any games in Perth, you can cheer them on at the FIFA Fan Festival at Forrest Chase.

What games are played in Perth?

Perth will be playing host to five matches at Perth Rectangular Stadium.

 • Denmark vs China on Saturday, July 22
 • Canada vs Republic of Ireland on Wednesday, July 26
 • Panama vs Jamaica on Saturday, July 29
 • Haiti vs Denmark on Tuesday, August 1
 • Morocco vs Colombia on Thursday, August 3

Who are the favourites?

Women's World Cup previous winners, USA
Women’s World Cup previous winners, USA | Image: Shutterstock

This is possibly the most important question for those of us who like a punt. USA, which currently holds the number one FIFA ranking, is widely considered as the tournament favourite. They’ve won the last two Women’s World Cups and could be the first country to ever win three consecutive World Cups — both men’s and women’s World Cups.

Next in line is England, Spain, Germany, France, and Australia. Australia has never made it further than the quarter-finals at a World Cup; however, this time, they have the advantage of the home crowd. Will that give them an edge and help them to the final game?

What are your predictions for the Women’s World Cup? Who will win the tournament? How deep will the Matildas go and will they make the final? What will be the score in their opening match?

Last World Cup, Paul the psychic octopus was there to provide some great tips to help with some of these questions. Sadly, Paul is no longer with us, but his expert sister Paulina has taken over and is ready to give you the best tips for the tournament via TABtouch’s Instagram and Facebook

What is the tournament format?

The format of the FIFA Women’s World Cup is the same as you’re used to for almost every other soccer tournament, like the previous World Cups and the Champions League.

It all starts with the Group Stage where each team plays each other. There are four teams in each group and the top two progress to the Round of 16. From here, it’s straight up elimination. The winners progress to the Quarter Finals, then the Semi-Finals, and then the Final.

On Thursday, July 20, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 kicks off with games being played in cities across Australia and New Zealand. In the lead-up to the World Cup, the Original Trophy tours through the host cities, including Perth.

As part of the tour, the trophy, which will be awarded to the winning team of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, was on display at Forrest Place in Perth yesterday. It then makes its way to Busselton on Saturday, July 8, Kununurra on Sunday, July 9, and Broome on Monday, July 10.

Football fans can have their photo taken with the Original Trophy, get autographs from female football heroes, including Perth Glory Captain Tash Rigby and FIFA Ambassador Aya Miyama, and even enjoy a kickabout on the mini-pitch.

Game schedule

The Trophy Tour sets the stage for one of the biggest football tournaments in WA’s history, with five blockbuster matches to be held in Perth as part of the tournament. These matches include:

 • Denmark vs People’s Republic of China on July 22
 • Republic of Ireland vs Canada on July 26
 • Panama vs Jamaica on July 29
 • Haiti vs Denmark on August 1
 • Morocco vs Colombia on August 3.

Throughout the month-long tournament, Forrest Place will be transformed into a Fan Festival hub, screening live matches, music and performances, football activations, and a variety of food and beverages for fans to enjoy.

The Cook Labor Government, through Tourism WA, has invested $35 million to deliver upgrades to the match venue, Perth Rectangular Stadium, demonstrating their commitment to supporting the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Stadium upgrades

The upgrades to Perth Rectangular Stadium include:

 • The installation of 9,500 square meters of hybrid turf in line with FIFA specifications, ensuring a state-of-the-art playing surface.
 • 294 new LED lights have been installed to meet FIFA’s TV broadcast standards, along with larger high-definition video boards.
 • The changing rooms have been revamped
 • A new tunnel has been created for players to enter the pitch.
 • Accessibility improvements have also been made to the ground.

The matches are expected to attract thousands of visitors from outside the state and contribute millions of dollars to the WA economy.

Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti expressed her excitement, saying, “This FIFA Women’s World Cup will be history-making for WA and will put our state on the map, with thousands of visitors coming here to see their country play and billions more watching on TV.”

There’s no doubt that for those of us who grew up in Perth, the South West is a memorable holiday destination and one we’ve all visited countless times. There is something about the region and the towns it encompasses that carries a unique sense of nostalgia and freedom — a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the simplicity of life. As the nights get longer and we find ourselves surrounded by winter, the air fills with the scent of woodfire smoke and crushed eucalyptus leaves. The bush turns verdant green, contrasting against the dark tar of the winding country roads, and we lie in bed at night drifting off to the sound of rain meeting the roof above us. This is winter in the South West corner of Australia, and if it feels like anything, it’s the wrap of a loved one’s warm arms around your body.

Djurapin, meaning ‘Happy’ in Nyoongar, is ideal for groups and families and the perfect place to base yourself for a South West winter getaway. Spend rainy days exploring the wineries of the Margaret River Region, afternoons warming up in the deluxe hot tub and nights entertaining with loved ones from the open-plan living areas.

If you’re after a wholesome break during the stormy months with a special someone, this sweet stay is the place.

Margaret River Holiday Cottages, Margaret River

Spend your days getting to know the friendly farm animals

Resting on the outskirts of the Margaret River township, you’ll find a farm stay made for winter days. Margaret River Holiday Cottages is home to nine family-friendly cottages and many loving farm animals. In the early evenings, the public firepit provides cosy relief from the nippy chill of the Margaret River air. An extra enticing aspect of this accommodation, especially in the cooler months, is its heated indoor pool, providing warmth and relaxation, it’s ideal when the brisk outdoors gets a little too much.

Breaksea, Albany

Sit curled up on the couch, gazing out of the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, at Breaksea to the big blue ocean, as humpback whales migrate through the bay. Positioned high above Frenchmans Bay, a 20-minute drive from Albany’s town centre, you’ll find this home with some of the most mesmerising views of the Indian Ocean in the South West. Do winter by the coast right and watch as grey clouds form and storms roll in across the horizon while reading to the backdrop of rain droplets gently sliding down the windowpane.

Stillwood Retreat, Denmark

Eagle Bay Brewing Co, Naturaliste

Gralyn Estate

Since 1975, Gralyn Estate has been crafting premium wine in their family vineyard. With 200 hectares of pasture and forest and four hectares under vine, Gralyn Estate is known for its Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Located on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, this awarding-winning cellar door is for all the wine lovers out there.

Liberté, Albany

In the historic London Hotel in Albany, you will find Liberté, a Parisian-inspired bar with both a food and drink menu that is a piquant fusion of French-Vietnamese cuisine. The cultural influence on the menu can also be felt in the interior design of the restaurant, as the moodiness of French and Vietnamese old-school elegance entangles one another, finding maximalism on the way.

Colonial Brewing Co, Bramley

There’s no doubt you’ve seen Colonial Brewing Co beverages on the shelf at your local bottle shop, so it makes sense to stop into this brewery that’s well known for all the right reasons. If the winter sun is out and shining when you visit CBCo you’ll want to pick a spot at one of its outdoor tables. In terms of cloudy day dishes, we highly recommend the crispy and fresh Parma pizza, as well as the juicy chorizo and smooth artichoke dip.

La Scarpetta Trattoria, Margaret River

Europe’s old-world charm meets the South West at La Scarpetta Trattoria. This whimsical restaurant is located on the main street of Margret River town and serves up a traditional Italian dining experience. The interior is a combination of exposed brick, warm woods, sea blue tones, and leafy greens, with stained glass window skylights, a sanctuary to eat, drink, and retreat from the rain outside.

See

Waterfalls

Quinnanup Falls

As the winter rain falls down across the land, the waterways receive their long-awaited respite from the heat of the dry summer. To the surprise of many people, the South West has a handful or so of waterfalls to discover during the cooler months. In Wilyabrup you’ll find Quinninup Falls, a 10-metre waterfall with a scenic hike along the Cape to Cape track to get there. If you prefer wide waterfalls over high ones, you’ll want to check out Yalgardup Falls, just west of Margaret River town. For those who are a little more daring to embrace the chill, you’ll find a couple of hidden spots along the falls to swim. Further down in the South West, a 20-minute drive from Pemberton, cascading amongst the Karri trees is Beedelup Falls. Travel even further south to Waterfall Beach, Denmark. Here a small waterfall tumbles down the weathered rocks onto the beach below, when it’s in full flow, it creeps along the white sand toward the crystal blue water of William Bay National Park.

Whale Watching

Whale watching in the South West | Video and image: Instagram @australias_southwest

Western Australia, especially the South West, is one of the world’s whale-watching hotspots. As the whales begin their migration up the coast, Flinders Bay in Augusta is where they make their first stop. Here, you’ll have the rare opportunity to see Humpback and Southern Right Whales interacting, with the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse being a great viewing spot. Other hotspots in the South West to witness these majestic giants of the ocean include Busselton, Augusta, Albany and Dunsborough.

Lighthouses

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse | Image: Margaret River Region

What better way to view Western Australia’s rugged, deep blue, winter seascapes and watch the dark clouds roll in, than from the top of a lighthouse. On the most Southern Westerly tip of Australia in Augusta, sits Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, which also happens to be the tallest lighthouse on Australia’s mainland. An hour and a half drive north will take you to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse just inland of Bunker Bay. Both lighthouses are open daily and are a great opportunity to slip on your beanie and take in the vastness of the South West.

Galleries and Museums

When the wet weather becomes too much to bear, spend the day inside browsing through a range of galleries and museums in the South West. At Aravina Estate in Yallingup Siding, is the official Western Australian surfing museum, the WA Surf Gallery. This nostalgic gallery is filled with rare memorabilia and historical surf photographs, it’s sure to be a walk down memory lane for any surfing fanatics. In Albany, the Museum of the Great Southern gives an introduction to the history of the area and is an excellent activity for everybody. There’s also an extensive list of art galleries throughout the South West that are worth visiting, but we’ll let you decide which of these spark your interest.

Go

Surfing

Yallingup Main Break
Yallingup Main Break | Image: Margaret River Region

The South West is ingrained with a surfing lifestyle and has been since surfers first started flocking to the Magret River region in search of big waves many decades ago. Between the months of May and August, the coast is pumping with swell for those of all levels. While the list of great surf spots in the South West is almost endless, here are some of the more notable ones.

Surfers Point, where the iconic Margaret River Pro is held, is both great for surfing and watching. Referred to as the birthplace of surfing in the South West, Yallingup Main Break is a sight and wave that truly never gets old. Cowarumup Bombora, or more simply Cow Bombie, is located two kilometres offshore of Gracetown. While it doesn’t always break, when the Southern Ocean brings the right swells this spot can produce waves in excess of 12 metres, making it at times a contender for Australia’s biggest wave.

Markets

Nothing says weekend mornings down south like a stroll through the Markets. The Margaret River Farmers Markets run every Saturday all year and have a selection of fresh local market produce and market vendors. If you’re a cheese lover (aren’t we all), then you’ll definitely want to make a stop past Jardin Estate and try its award-winning range of butter as well as the truffle cheese. Over in Busselton is Origin Markets, which are indoors making them very handy in the wintertime. Here you’ll find everything from local produce to pottery, artworks, jewellery, clothes, homewares, and more.

Spas

BODHI Yallingup
BODHI Yallingup | Image: BODHI Spa

The South West is one of the best places to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and allow ourselves to fall into a much-needed state of rest and relaxation. Why not up the ante and add a little rejuvenation on top of that as well — I mean what better way to escape the wintry world outside than at a day spa? In Yallingup, you’ll find the luxuriously indulgent Injidup Retreat and Spa. With uninterrupted ocean views and a range of wellness options focused on nurturing the body, mind and soul, you’ll leave here feeling deeply nourished. Perth day spa franchise Bodhi can also be found in Yallingup by the tranquil waters of Lake Gunyulgup. Here you can undertake an array of holistic well-being treatments that will have you walking away feeling revitalised. Vie Spa at the Pullman Bunker Bay is another luxurious day spa with an extensive menu of massages, facials, and full-body treatments to help give you a glow in winter.

Caves

Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave
Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave | Image: Margaret River Region

Caves have long been a popular tourist attraction in the South West, especially the Margaret River region in particular. While some caves close over the winter months, many remain open. Some people don’t know that most caves often have a constant temperature. This makes caving a great activity in the cooler months; not only is it an opportunity to hide from the rain, but chances are, it might even be a little warmer in the cave. The level of peacefulness that can be found in a cave is unmatched. Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave, and Ngilgi Cave are three to check out when down south, and they are open most hours of each day, every week and season.

Workshops and Classes

Throughout the many towns of the South West, you will find a selection of workshops and classes to suit every personality and specific interest. From cooking classes to spirit distilling, pottery and printmaking workshops, and art and photography classes, there really is no shortage. The good thing about these workshops and classes is that many of them run indoors making them an ideal rainy-day activity. When the weather isn’t saying beach day or vineyard tour, why not head indoors and learn a new skill, get creative, or bring something to life with your hands?

Bluff Knoll

Bluff Knoll

Looking to catch some snow this winter? Look no further.

Bluff Knoll, located in the Stirling Range National Park in the Great Southern, is the highest point in the South West and is one of the only places in Western Australia to see snow. While your chances of catching snowfall on Bluff Knoll might be slim, either way, you’ll experience some of the most picturesque 360-degree views from its summit which sits at 1098 meters above sea level. The trail up the mountain to the peak is a 6-kilometre return walk which is steep and challenging at certain points. Nonetheless, Bluff Knoll is one of the South West’s top winter attractions, and is definitely one to add to the bucket list for all the adventurers out there.

Perth has made a remarkable leap in the global liveability rankings, securing the 12th spot in the June 2023 survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). This significant advancement comes as a result of substantial improvements across various aspects of livability, positioning Perth as one of the most desirable cities to reside in worldwide.

The EIU’s extensive survey analysed 173 cities around the globe, evaluating critical factors such as stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education, and infrastructure. Although affordability was not included in the survey, the assessment focused on a wide range of elements that contribute to a city’s livability index. Each city was assigned an aggregate score out of 100, indicating its position in the rankings.

Perth’s jump in the rankings can be attributed to a combination of factors — most we know all too well. With our perthfect weather, beautiful beaches, easy access to the best wine region in the world (Margaret River), and so many holiday destinations on our doorstep, we’re actually surprised we didn’t make the #1 spot.

On the east coast, Melbourne and Sydney both made the top 10 at third and fourth places, respectively. Our cousins over in Auckland rounded off the top 10 sitting in tenth place.

10 Most Liveable Cities

The day has finally arrived, and while Exmouth will become the epicentre of the world’s Total Solar Eclipse attention, it doesn’t mean the people of Perth will miss out.

A Total Solar Eclipse occurs somewhere on Earth approximately every 18 months, making this an incredibly rare occurrence for Western Australia. Today’s astronomical event will mark the first Total Solar Eclipse to occur in WA since the 20th of June, 1974.

What makes this Total Solar Eclipse even more special is that the path will be over some of the more remote parts of Earth. It’s estimated that approximately 375,000 people will be positioned to see a totality/annularity (100%) eclipse — that’s about 0.004% of the world’s population.

Perth Total Solar Eclipse Times

The eclipse is set to begin around 10:00 am and last for over two hours with the annularity set to occur around 11:30 am in Exmouth. However, according to timeanddate.com, Perth will experience our annularity at 11:20 am which will be approximately 76% of a full eclipse.

Live Stream

If you don’t want to head outside and look up, you can stay inside and watch on your monitor or phone. Perth Observatory and timeanddate.com will be providing live footage of the Total Solar Eclipse.

Will there be another Total Solar Eclipse in Western Australia

As this is an incredibly rare event, if you’re unable to witness this eclipse, the next one won’t occur until 2028. WA will witness just five more total eclipses in the next 50 years:

 • 22 July 2028: Total Eclipse – North WA
 • 13 July 2037: Total Eclipse – Geraldton
 • 26 December 2038: Total Eclipse – Onslow)
 • 17 December 2066: Total Eclipse – Margaret River, Augusta, Denmark, and Albany)
 • 31 May 2068: Total Solar Eclipse – Perth

Go on, escape the ordinary.

Bound by rugged coastlines, mountain ranges, and thick native forests, there’s no end to the beauty of the Great Southern region.

To see it at its best, begin with a three-kilometre round-hike through Porongurup National Park and out to the Granite Skywalk, where clambering to the top of the 670m high peak will reward you with unparalleled views out towards Albany. More challenging is the Bluff Knoll climb in the neighbouring Stirling Ranges. It’s 1,099 metres in elevation and has a gradient of 20 percent most of the way up.

The Gap and Natural Bridge

Ocean lovers can see its fury at The Gap and Natural Bridge. A short, accessible walk will have you standing on the lookout platform in no time, looking down as the tide surges in and crashes into the granite cliff face.

Adventure

Once you’re through adventuring by foot, send yourself on a culinary adventure.

The Great Southern is known for its cooler-climate produce and wines, the best of which is on show over the 11-day Taste Great Southern festival, May 4th – 14th. More than 20 local and interstate chefs converge on the region for a bumper program of 40+ food-filled events.

Albany Akoya oysters
Albany Akoya oysters | Image supplied

Start your exploration with a tour of Cheynes IV whale chaser and some canapes at Next Port of Call (Tuesday, May 9th). Wander through the now-decommissioned ship as the sun sets before joining the party on the deck. There will be plenty of King George Whiting bites, Albany Akoya oysters, and a glass or two of local Oranje Tractor wines going around.

Connect with the Great Southern boodja (land) on a deeper level as Kurrah Mia’s Larry Blight guides you through the scrub on a bush tucker tour. It makes up the first part of the Djeran Celebration with Fervor (Sunday, May 14th), where the culture and foods of the Menang, Koreng, and Pibelman people are front and centre.

Pre-tour, you’ll be welcomed to country and join a smoking ceremony at the 6000-year-old Oyster Harbour Fishing Traps, an important food source and meeting place for the Aboriginal people of the area. Then, it’s Blight’s tour, where he draws on knowledge from his Menang ancestors to find and share local foods and medicines. Finish the day off with a three-course lunch showcasing many of the native plants you’ve just found, prepared by Fervor Food’s Paul Iskov. His native-inspired dinner event sold out in record time, so this is your only other chance to experience his meticulous and considered local menu.

Feast

After feasting your eyes on the towering Tingle Trees, endemic to the Walpole Area, and Denmark’s impossibly blue (and misleadingly named) Green’s Pool, it’s time to tend to your stomach.

Catch of the South - Taste Great Southern
Catch of the South | Image supplied

Nothing says ‘feast’ like a healthy eight-course meal, least not one that takes you through the A to Z of the region’s prime seafood. Join a rota of the state’s best chefs — and Masterchef alum Gary Mehigan — at Catch of the South (Friday, May 12th) as they share their take on Albany Akoya, fresh Great Southern sardines, and everything in between. To top things off, you’ll get matched Cherubino wines

The fine food doesn’t stop there — it’s Taste Great Southern, after all.

Image supplied

From coastal cuisine to pastoral, the Taste True Passion dinner (Saturday, May 13th) is a change of pace and protein. Chef Kenny McHardy — of Manuka Woodfire Kitchen fame — will be manning the grill in the Jack Cox courtyard and rose maze at Kojonup’s Kodja Place. Watch as the flames lick at local Kojonup wagyu beef skewers, and savour the scent of the slowly-roasting lamb leg, served with smoked yoghurt and salty, succulent red karkalla.

Indulge

With so many dinners on the event calendar, a dessert degustation makes a sweet reprieve. The best place for it? One of Albany’s top cafes. Book a seat at Lavender Cottage and Tea RoomsSweet and Sticky event (Monday, May 8th), and five courses of cake, custards, and chocolate await you, paired with five Great Southern wines. It’s a most decadent menu.

But, the pinnacle of indulgence is Fee Fi Fo Fum — Great Southern Indulgence (Sunday, May 14th), an 8-course dinner prepared by Garrison owner Jonni Saville Wright and Gary Mehigan. The two Brits have joined forces to showcase the finest in Great Southern produce and what is — arguably — Albany’s best view, that of King George Sound. The menu for this event has just been released and it looks quite delectable. It’s hard to pick which dish we’re looking forward to tasting the most — the Wagyu beef tartare with beetroot, pickles, and salt & vinegar crisps, and the duck fat roasted rosemary potatoes are two of the standouts.

While the exact menu is still a closely guarded secret, there’s no doubt it will be a night to remember.

Wine tasting at Great Southern Cellar Door
Wine tasting at Great Southern Cellar Door | Image supplied

Complete indulgence doesn’t always have to equate to high expenditure. For the price of two burgers, you can sip your way through over 100 Great Southern wines and savour the sound of local tunes at the Great Southern Cellar Door (Saturday, May 6th). Order a flavour-packed meal from one of the food trucks and a glass of your favourite wine, and soak up the festival-like atmosphere. Fancy brushing up on your wine knowledge? Book yourself into one of the many cellar workshops running throughout the day.

Savour

Lose yourself in the beautifully haunting tones of Courtenay Stickels and her band at The Singer and The Cook in Kendenup (Saturday, May 6th), but not before dining on a two-course meal she’s prepared for you herself. She’ll be swapping out the apron for the microphone mid-event, transforming the corrugated-iron-clad Henderson & Hwang into an intimate performance space. Combining music, singing, and story, it’ll truly be a moment to savour.

Throughout the course of Taste Great Southern, rieslings and shiraz feature heavily. For something a little different and for slower sipping, let Hybla and Limeburners welcome you into their worlds. Savour four of Limeburners’ 13-strong whisky range, paired with Akaushi wagyu beef from Hybla’s Melaleuka farm, at the Wagyu & Whisky Long Table Dinner (Friday, May 12th).
